Title: Anyone grown Melons before?

Could someone who has actually GROWN Melons please let me know how to tell when they are ripe enough to pick?

I have grown Melons, last year and this, generally the skin will yield a little under slight pressure, depending on type they may be smaller than you see in the shops but still as tasty, it is a little difficult in this country without a heated greenhouse, I find they dont get very big, but generally if I think it has stopped growing thats probably as far as it is going to go and then wait a while longer

I grew one especially for northern climes in an unheated poly. It was from Dobies of Devon and was delicious. It only grew about 7" in diameter but prolific. Sorry cant remember its name but is on their website for northern climates
