Title: Goat house under construction...
Post by: ambriel on June 21, 2011, 12:49:47 pm

Thought I'd share a few pics of our new goat house under construction.

Should be finished and ready for them by the weekend.

Three sides built.

Runners now on.

The drill's off for a re-charge and a pint of Guinness before carrying on...

Doing a wonderful job, not too much Guiness otherwise that roof will be lobsided  ;) I have loads of jobs like that around due to that horrid winter (still not much better) I have no skills that I could put into practice as I can never cut wood the same twice, even after being measured, not sure why but, need a handy man, mine is handy but not at DIY, just washing up and hoovering!!!

I'm something of a wood butcher myself. Measure twice - cut once is the motto, apparently.

It's going up though. Roof on now. Needs felting tomorrow.

Once I helped 15 year old in woodwork and one lad asked me to help him cut his table legs, they all ended up different sizes so I ended up with a wonky table, funnily enough I still have it and its as tough as old boots!!!! Looking good, putting on felt is sometimes not as easy as it looks!!!

Especially when you have 3 very inquisitive Kunes trying to help, too! :)

lovely .... hope it last, not a slight on your woodwork, but knowing ho much goats LOVE to chew wood!

That's why I decided to build my own rather than just buy a cheap shed and modify it. 20mm sarking on 3"x2" frame and sleds.

The Kunes were looking at it with envious eyes so I suspect there may be a coup in the planning...

... "sty" surely?!
ours live in a shed, so do the chickens, that reduces confusion!

Very nice - could do with one of those for the pygmy intact billy that I have rescued.  I see you have dry stone walls like us.  My smaller goats leap on the wall, and then onto the roof of the hen huts.....do a tap dance, then slide down the sloping roof and jump off.  Everything to do with goats has to be tough, then stand on it, butt it, nibble it ........have fun ;D

Yes, a friend of ours recently commented that it was only when he got goats that he realised his pigs didn't really have a clue about escaping. Goats are the real masters.

Hopefully ours won't be too naughty. There's plenty of room for them and lots to keep them interested.

Looking good - I'm sure they'll be very happy with you  ;D

Dont worry about them escaping - they are too lazy and only hang around where the easy food is!

See you soon  :goat:

It's got a floating floor. The local hotel gave me 2sq.m of thick vinyl flooring which I've stapled to the inside. It' s flexible but remains a good barrier to damp, plus will be easy to clean.

Picking up the girls this weekend.

:D Eastling, is your husband prone to getting carried away, like mine?!
he built a huge two storey, pointy-roofed, fancy great wooden thing... when all I asked for was a simple guinea pig sized nesting hutch!!  he ran out of wood for the floors!

Wow, ambriel  (that would make a nice Lab puppy name) Maybe instead of "kids"  :goat:  you should build little homes for kids

Collected our two new ladies from Shiv and Ben today.

Got them home safe and sound and they're now ensconsed in their new palace with a bucket of water and a big bowl of barley, plus plenty of soft and comfy hay.

Will give them a tour of the ponderosa tomorrow, weather-permitting.

why not - its a great idea!
just be carefull what you use the water for - goats etc are better off with fresh water.
After losing loads of chicks & old hens, I found out my o/h had been filling up their drinkers from the water butts ... I'm sure they picked up something nasty from there...
