Title: UK requirements on the production ok rose veal
Post by: farming_newblood on February 06, 2009, 10:19:32 am: im interested in raising calves for rose veal, but i cant find the UK requirements to have it classified as rose veal. can any one point me in the right direction

mine are dexter, what breed are you thinking of doing ?

Post by: farming_newblood on February 08, 2009, 05:54:46 pm: sorry im meaning feeding requirements (how much milk, haylage silage etc, space allowance etc im looking at holstiens meat is very little but they taste amazing we reared a "pet" bull for the freezer as a child and i still remember how good the meat was!

all mine are left on their mothers out at grass till their day comes, thats normaly anything between 6-8 months, never any older.

anything older than that is kept till when its finished as beef, between 18 and 20 months ;D

Post by: herdsman on March 01, 2009, 09:12:55 am: I know a farmer who produces rose veal for Waitrose. He is feeding add lib milk from a machine that mixes powder automatically so it is available all the time. They are bedded on clean straw with no grass or weeds in it so there is no green matter at all. This straw is also available for eating. Thats it. oh and water of course. The calves are belgian blue cross holstein or pure holstein from his dairy herd and look fantastic. I think if there is any hay or weed (green) in the straw then the meat will become darker. Let us know how you get on.

Post by: chickens on May 24, 2009, 06:53:44 am: I produced rose veal and was really pleased with it - the calf was a jersey calf who was left with his mother in the field and fed luzerne, mangels, hay, grass and milk from his mum of course. He was 8 months old. I am thinking of going in to rose veal more seriously as the feedback was so good.
