Title: Animated images in signatures
Post by: Dan on May 09, 2011, 08:41:53 am
In an effort to improve the accessibility of the forums (to users with disabilities) we've decided to restrict the use of images in signatures to static images only.

If your signature features an animated image please remove it as soon as possible. In a week we'll be doing a quick trawl of signatures and will remove any the are lingering.

Thanks for your help with this.  :)

Thank goodness - migraines galore with some of them.

Could you also restrict size? Large pics at the bottom of an individuals posts are of no interest, take up room onscreen and are tiresome to scroll down.

Great idea. I find it difficult to read some posts when there is something flashing in front of my eyes. Well done.

Hi Dan - the week's up and they're still there.  I have to hold something over the images to read the posts - looking forward to not having them, even though some are quite funny/cute.

I didn't understand this post for a while, but have now remembered that the first thing I did on joining the forum was to switch of displaying signatures in my profile. So if anyone is still having trouble, maybe just switch them off!

I think I've covered most animated signatures now, if I've missed any please let me know.

Hi Ben  That's a great idea but...um...how do you switch them off?

Go to your profile (http://www.accidentalsmallholder.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=1;sa=theme) and tick the box "Don't show users' signatures."

Yep, go to 'Profile' and in the menu on the left choose "Look and Layout Preferences" and then tick the box for "Don't show users' signatures".

I thought some of them were very good, brighten up a dull and boring day when on this site.

Your last one with the two wheeled van did make me laugh  :D.  Unfortunately some people are very sensitive to flicker - causes migraine and epileptic fits - and when you are trying to read something next to a flickering image it becomes painful, even worse when what you are reading is squashed between two.  I know they were meant as fun but were a genuine problem to some people me included :(  Wot a party pooper  ::)

As a side note, don't you think ALL internet sites have too much going on?

Definitely.  Can hardly concentrate on what I want to see with all that blinking, popping up, flashing, or telling me I have won a prize

It was funny a few years ago when my grandaughter went to play a game on the internet, something like Bob the builder! and she said, " nanan, they is a lady keeps popping up smiling and licking her lips in the courner" It was a pop up that I soon got rid of!!!! I hate all the ruddish on some sites and its often hard not to accidently click on them!!!! lets keep this click free...boring people we are ;)

This is the main reason we've asked members not to have animated signatures. Movement on screen can cause many people problems, and we want to be as accessible as possible.

there is one site i visit it has a black background with yellow writing   and after reading the posts my eyes can only be described as looking at a venetian blind yet these moving images do not impare my vision
obviously television and cinema must have the same effect?
i will just away to to the nursing home next door and get fitted with adult pampers and have my tea with bromide :farmer:

Yellow foreground text on a black background will be very comfortable for people with certain visual impairments, but as you've said can be very uncomfortable for others (like you and I). The opposite is also true, so while you have no problem with moving images many people do.

Yes, although it's not as simple as all moving images causing a problem. The refresh rate of a screen, the underlying technology, brightness, contrast, etc will all be a factor. The guiding principle (on the web at least) is to reduce moving images to an absolute minimum, and not start things like video until the user chooses to.

Age is a factor for some impairments like macular degeneration, but many people are born with visual impairments, or develop them very early in life.

Well I do get migraine sometimes but had not had a problem with the busy logos on this site.  (I had to stop playing Tetris on facebook though!)

Maybe an idea for any future such forum site would be to allow readers to switch off animations, so that those who like to post them can do so but those who prefer not to see them can switch them off?
