Title: Cost of wormer
Post by: Rosemary on April 09, 2011, 02:58:27 pm
If I'm honest, I don't always work out the cost of things. Today I asked Dan to order some VermX for the sheep - he doesn't mind looking for the cheapest prices, whereas I get fed up. He just came in and asked me how much did I think it cost per sheep - 10g / day / sheep for 7 days each month? Worked out at about £15 per sheep.

Now, I also worm test - each one costs about £8. I do composites ie one per group of sheep not one per sheep and do it twice a year - so about 4 a year, £32.

I'm wondering if I would be cheaper using the worm tests plus a chemical wormer if I need to. I have give them a flukicide anyway twice a year. The vet will give me small doses at a reasonable cost.

What does everyone else do?

Hi Rosemary,

I'm in the worm-test - then worm only if necessary with a good chemical wormer camp. and change the wormer used each season.

But like most things, others will swear by worming regardless, and each will have their fave wormer, So whatever works for you in a cost effective manner - as long as the worm counts come back with low epg then you needn't worry.
