Title: Abattoir cost
Post by: Mel on March 28, 2011, 02:29:30 pm
Hi all!

We are very nearly ready to have our first pigs! I was doing some research as to cost's and my local abattoir charges £24.00 per slaughter plus the levy and vet another £6.55.To joint them into basic cuts is going to cost between £40 and £50.(that is up to 180LBS or 85KG),there is a surcharge if any larger. If we wish for sausages they would be £1.09p per Lb on top of the £50.00.

Is this reasonable by your standards only a local pig farmer has said it is really very expensive?!

We would really appreciate your advice and replies.our local Abattoir is H Hellett of Kimbolton.Bedfordshire some 12-15 miles from us.By the way,he only accepts pigs using slap marker as said the tags come off through processing which is another extra expense.

We paid £36 for pig no.1 (62 kg) and £42 for pig no.2 (86 kg). I think the cut off is 75 kg for the up in cost.  Sausages were 95p/lb and the bacon/gammon joints were £5 each.  In total we paid £203 for kill, cut, sausages and curing - not too bad I don't think.

Our local abattoir charge £18 each to kill, up to 100kg.

We butcher ourselves here and charge £20 for a basic cut.  £1.25 per kilo for sausages.

Ask how much he would charge to mince the meat and make your own sausages.  You should get the skins back from your abattoir (at least we do) and if all else fails it is not too onerous to fill the skins using a wooden spoon, although a sausage attachment available on some mixers and mincers does make the job easier.

Many abattoirs are struggling to survive, and work on small margins.

I fully expect many more to go in the next five years, so make the most of a short journey whilst you can, and judge the cost by additional petrol to the second nearest.

I feel quite fortunate having a good, small abattoir just 15 minutes away which does a kill and cut for between £35 and £40, depending on what I ask for re. butchery. They do an excellent job at butchering, too - unlike some places which are a bit "rough and ready" when cutting up.

Which abbatoir is that Liz - we are looking out for somewhere local for our pigs in June.   Looks as though I may have to hire a trailer too as ours doesn't have side/ramp gates, would you know of anywhere local?

Craig, the abattoir I use is Havard's in Caerphilly. Really good place - only a small operation, but has been there for a couple of generations. Not only does Dai butcher really well, but he is patient and caring with the pigs when they arrive. Where are you, then?

We pay £19 per pig killed. Never been charged extra for weigth and ours tend to be 120kg+. We butcher ourselves so no idea about that but £50 seems high to me.

They changed the rules for us recently so we have to use a specific butcher.  He collects from us, takes to abattoir, collects carcass and cuts.  Min. 120 euros per pig.  Bit of a hike as it was 70 under the old rule.

HM, why was that changed? So you can't take your pigs yourself anymore?

Local abattoir will not take them as they are raised outdoors.  (Apparently those raised in a barn with access to fresh air but not grass are acceptable).   This coincided with the Agri people deciding that only one local butcher was approved for us (because ours are outdoor raised).  We can take pigs for our own use and use our "old" butcher but for sale its now the very expensive route.  C'est la vie as the man said!  :)

leghorn we dropped the first 2 off at hellets this morning all went very well, the vet was lovely and very through and the bonus for us was we know one of the slaughtermen from years back (did not know he worked there until a few days back) so we know the animals were in safe hands. will report back after we collect the meat with all the costings.

we were so pleased with the service the next 4 have been booked in for the begining of may.

;) just to add i have just recived a slaughter report from the vet at hellets to say everything was fine with both pigs.

We've never seen a slaughter report (nor a vet, but we used a very small place up until last year). Is it usual to receive that?
We'll be taking ours elsewhere this year, so we may get to see both.

this is the smallest of the 3 slaughter houses we have used and the second to see a vet on site both vets insist on inspecting the animals prior to dropping the loading ramp and a closer inspection on unloading.it is also our first report very reassuring everything is being done a ok.

right the meat is back the prices worked out at

killing & dressing 2 x £39
sausages 63lb £68.67 (£1.09 per LB)
mlc levy 2 x £1.05 + 21p VAT
inspection costs 2 x £5.50 + VAT £1.10

invoice total for 2 pigs £162.39

obviously the sausages depend on the size of the pig.

the cutting was done well. we are more than pleased with the service and intend to keep using them.

Did you get it cut into all the joints you wanted for this price?

yes we took the pigs to the slaughter house then just popped into the butchers shop on site and handed over our cutting list it all came back just so, which is a bonus the other 2 slaughter houses have been a bit hit and miss with the cutting list.
