Title: inverted teat??
Post by: gapcap on March 18, 2011, 06:28:14 pm
My sow is due to farrow anytime now, on my routine belly rub cum teat check(she now has milk ;D) noticed one of her teats seem to be inverted, dont think it was like that this morning,I've massaged it,but that hasnt made any difference the actual nipple is not visible just seems to folded up inside if you get my meaning, any suggestions please??This is her 2nd litter, she had 13 last time and was a great mum succesfully rearing all of them.

How many good teats does she have? Presumably 14? If it looks inverted, there's probably nothing you're going to be able to do about it. It could be that (like one of mine), she was low-slung and trod on a teat, cutting off the blood supply.
Make sure that, if she has more piglets than teats this time, they all manage to feed okay - at least for the first few hours to get the all-important colostrum. With a bigger litter, you may find yourself bottle feeding (ask others on the forum about this - lots of varied experiences).
Good luck
Liz

Thanks for the reply, You got it spot on,after  another examination and bathing it I discovered it wasn't inverted but gone!!, I've purple sprayed it and bathed it again, looks nice and clean and healed, She has got 14,(well did have!!) No babies yet, think she's enjoying her time languishing in the maternity suite too much!!
