After a LONG wait and an absolute fiasco of a farrowing (totally our fault :-\) my wee Kune Kune piglets arrived today (8 weeks late !)
7 in total, 2 gilts and 5 boars - 1 not doing so well, got him inside heating up and bottle feeding.
Here's hoping he makes it through the night and can go back out with mum tomorrow ! Photo's soon ;o)

photos now please ;D ;D ;D
how can you be out by 8 weeks on your dates? :pig: :pig: :pig:
-
Firstly, little 'Lucky' (named by Lillian & Robert cos they were here visiting and got roped in ;) Don't know what I'd have done without you guys THANKS AGAIN :-*) is back out with mum ;D He had some 'litter care' from Supplies from Smallholders (on here ;)) and after a bit of a heat up and a few syringes of baby milk was trying to jump out of the box ::) He's had a feed with mum and is suggled up with the rest of his brothers and sisters. All's well that ends well  :pig:
Secondly, the 8 weeks out thing :-\
She was definately served on 10-10-10 (we saw the evidence) and she definately didn't seem to come back into season 3 weeks after this. So we brought her in to the shed just before 30th Jan expecting piglets, she hurt her leg (some of you may remember the post about the metacam) and the 30th came and went with no piglets ???
We kept her in thinking that maybe she had returned to season and after a quick recalculation figured the piglets would arrive around the 20th of February. Needless to say that came and went too with no signs ??? ::) So further calculations made us think that next week would have been her date, except she got fed up hanging around in the shed and broke out last week so she could go back to the field with her hubby :-\ ::) We noticed her udder starting to bag up on Tuesday, planned to move her back into the shed today. Went out this morning to feed her and no sign of her in the field, a quick check of the arc revealled piglets and mummy seeming well. We did our mad dash switch around of pigs and pens and fields ::) and brought her and her piglets inside. Phew - what a day !
Here's a photo of Rebecca giving Lucky a cuddle before he went back out - I'll get photos of the whole lot tomorrow.
Thanks for all you comments and wishes,
Karen x

Can they store semen LW? I have a feeling I heard of that in another species but can't remember what animal it was. Could that be the answer in both cases?
-
no i think the both of missed the activity second or third time round
-
I know 2 other people that have had unexplained delays over this winter too (despite being certain of service dates). I think it's just pigs proving that no matter how much you think you know, it's time you learned something else ::) ;D
Photo's tomorrow folks ;)
-
Congratulations.
I think the word is to expect the unexpected with pigs!
Hope you're all keeping warm and battening down the hatches for the forthcoming advised weather, think it will sweep past us landing slightly further north but extra straw all round tonite just in case.

Hi HH  I'm so glad she's farrowed successfully at last and what a cutie the little one is :pig:. Hope to see them all one day.
-
Here's the long awaited photo ;D (sorry 'bout the quality - blame Bruce ;))
I'll get some more over the next few days and add them on.
Unfortunately we lost little Lucky last night :'( :'( :'(
Of the 6 remaining, we have 2 gilts and 4 boars.
1 gilt is reserved already, I'll need to give it a couple of days to see them up and about before I know whether the other gilt and which of the boars will be suitable for breeding.
If anyone's interested in breeding stock, please pm me as soon as you can (otherwise all the boys go for castration @ 6 weeks old)
Bloodlines are Te Whangi and Awakino
Breeding Registered weaners £120
Registered (as pets/pork) £80
Any questions - ask away
