Well after a previous thread about this program I thought I would put it on the planner to watch.
I have just seen them milking out the male turkey sperm for artificial insemination :o Never thought about how to do that before :)
Not sure about the challenge aspect of the program, but I learnt something new so it must be good ;D

Quite nice - a bit more pheasanty than chicken and a bit more chickeny than pheasant. They are easy and hardy as long as you can get at the eggs, but if you buy in eggs then hatch and dispatch all in one season they are a good "crop"

I love the old couple, (my age) they have a good way with animals and are practical too and they are deserving of the time on the farm as they have less time to live! ;D

the other couple should have gone. they maybe better at the sales side. but its hard to sell what the fox had eaten. plus those hens looked pretty old for meat birds. what profit would they have got from them.

I listened carefully to the intro tonight and I wonder if we have got it wrong. I think they get the farm permanently and have financial back up for a year. It's not just the farm for a year I don't think. Can somebody listen to the wording and see if they think I'm right. Perhaps it's a rented farm for as long as they want it rather than a fully owned one, and it's only 25 acres i think.
Either way, I enjoyed tonight's programme, found it very interesting, not quite so stupidly funny as previous episodes and I learnt quite a lot too. Presumably they have to inseminate the turkeys every time they lay an egg? Or does the semen stay viable for a fair length of time?

Have been watching from the start and find it quite interesting but tonight the other couple should have gone. Maybe they will surprise me but betting they will be gone before long especially if the tasks start involving some actual farming ::)

I think the wee dangerous looking guy with the stubble and dark eyes and his blonde missus should have got the boot. It's only a matter of time before he batters somebody. ;D Their fencing was crap, and she had no idea how to move among stock.
I missed the first half hour of it tonight...thank feck. ::) ;D

i think you have it right probably a rented farm but the first year is free to let them establish themselves.
with ref to the meat birds again the stock was representative of what they would get not necessarilly the stock thet would actually use.
on a plus we saw the original plots with pigs on a bit more last night as well ;D ;D

I have been watching this prog, I am also unsure what the actual prize is, I want the old couple to win, well actually by a freak of nature I want to win, lol
the only problem I have is...... Its like watching a cookery program most weeks, not enough animal care, breeding, and husbandry for me,

We keep Guinea Fowl. Taste is gamey. I thought the meat of the birds in the program quite pale in comparison to ours though. They are a nice bird to have on the farm but very VERY noisy.

I missed most of the program (just couldn't be bothered with it this week), but said exactly the same thing. I think they went as the guy rubbed Jimmyboy (and no doubt the program makers) up the wrong way with his comments about the judging panel system.

Bless, even I wouldn't do that, although I must say the amont of time one of our cutlery knifes is used out in the garden, handy for weeding down cracks and for digging up little worms from under stones ;)

The would be pasta chef and his blonde other half should definately have walked yesterday - how PATHETIC to wimp out from sorting out their livestock fencing just because it was raining...

I thought the idea was sound - much like the Chicken 'starter packs' you see - but one duck? If they'd got their idea fully formed and presented it would have been better. But I didn't like them, so wouldn't have bought one from them anyway ;D
I'd like some ducks, but I want to eat them ;)

I found this one more interesting and less purely mockery but I still rant that cooking and marketing are seen as more valuable farming skills than fencing, stock care and even health & safety :o I know the winners will need both but they are solely judging on marketing and the couple where he cooks pasta and threatens to rant if anyone criticises his cooking, while his blonde g/f appears to have no contribution to make (or maybe doesn't get a chance ::) ) would have been my "ones to boot"
I love the old couple - they are great with all the animal handling, good with the public, work as a team and stay calm in a crisis even if his penknife job wasn't the best approach after the great plan of an augur fell apart cos he was handed a dud one ::) I reckon they'll farm regardless of the programme, in a small scale way, with animals and some decent cooked produce at local farmers markets and have a great time - hope they find us as I'd like to talk to them :)
And I very much enjoyed seeing animals from the first programme again being fed and looked after - even a few plants being watered :o I wonder if the prog will come back to that original idea to see how they deliver on the promised business plan..

Absolutely agree with tonight's eviction 100%, wanted them away last week cos they do my head in - bangers and mash as a dairy marketing product ??? ::) Good for the wifey that stuck to her guns over making icecream despite what came over as bullying behaviour - even tho it wasn't a perfect outcome she still made it into something lovely, saleable and essentially dairy ::) so I have to say it, I reckon Jamie got it right this time :o ;D

Yes, enjoyed tonight's programme and the right couple got shown the farm gate.
If the other couple had got started earlier and made their ice cream by hand, instead of wasting half the day trying to rent an ice cream maker, they'd have done better.
Barbie's "Ken" was a bit of a tit and it's high time he got the boot.
I thought the wooden-woolly was a bit of a waste of time, but hey. At least they were producing proper dairy-based food and not bangers'n'mash.

Just watched it on i-player, and I have to admit it kept my attention almost as well as Crufts did ;D ;D ;D Agreed with the decision, and as for products - I don't put much milk in mash so couldn't see that working right from the start. They made more money because of the miserable weather more than anything. Coming from an ice cream family I'd have known how to make ice cream correctly by hand, but I suppose not everyone knows it needs to be frozen lightly, then mixed throughly and refrozen a few times to eliminate the ice crystals and curdling. If you ever buy ice cream with ice crystals in it there are two reasons, one of them as in the programme, and the other is that the ice cream has been left to melt and been refrozen - and that is a health hazard. So if you get any like that, don't eat it, send it back! Liked the idea of making the softened ice cream into smoothies though.
Quite liked the milking sheep idea but he spent far too much time on it, and should have got his resident chippie to help - he knows his stuff. And the intro titles suggest that they do get the 25 acre farm plus funding for a year.

Is it true that if ice cream melts and you refreeze it, it (somehow) gets arsenic in it? Or something like that. Typing it out makes it sound silly, but i got it from somewhere.
I spent the programme muttering that she needed to stir her ice cream :)
I'm wondering what they do the rest of the time, maybe that's when they're getting the hands on stuff that would be more interesting (to us) ?

Yup, the right pair got chucked out this week - the arrogant 'know all' and his follower.
Although doomed from the start (no stirring) I thought the ice cream was well rescued (ice cream smoothie) although she got no praise for it - but making something from nothing is so much a part of it all.
And agree, too much time spent cooking and not enough time spent in the field or farmyard.

Good for them to try though and genius idea to rescue it. Silly blondie getting all upset and saying "Its not safe! I'm making an executive decision". I haven't seen the whole series but seemed like the right decision for them to go.

I enjoy the progamme and can see why they do the cookery but it all seems a bit false to me, do they realy do it in the time they have? I cannot imajine someone knowcking at the door saying you have a day to do some of the tasks ;)
Not sure why I never remember the names but I like all those who are left but did not like the man that went, he would annoy me with his self self self approach, I think he is a bit arrogant and feel sorry for his women as she< I recon, is only doing the farmer bit to please him and he's was on ly doing it to copy the current trend and be something like the next Hue F W (not spelling that without a google search)

I am hoping that they have been working away behind the scenes feeding their livestock and tending their crops.......?
Being a cynic, I wonder how much we are all being led by the editors, showing us the bits they want us to see and not those they don't, so we are all behind Jimmy's decisions?

I can't imagine what they advertised for when looking for participants. Something like ' Must want to farm but have no experience of livestock, growing, fencing or common sense' was probably about it.

Sorry never heard of that one! Pretty glad to as I quite like it crunchy ;) Providing it's from my own freezer not someone else's of course! ;D ;D

I've never heard about arsenic but definitely know you shouldn't refreeze ice cream. It can make you very ill

Only because it has so much milk in it and bacteria can get into it once it has become unfrozen. There is a point where it is safe to eat - mushed up in your plate for instance - a yummy kigger, but it should not then be refrozen.

Weren't the ones that left the ones that were going to have a goat farm and spent a lot of the mutton marketing campaign making a big goat farm logo plastered at the top that made the sheep product rather irrelevant? I can't remember what they planned to make out of the goats, but I think the wife was talking posh salad leaves to serve with whatever it was ???
I'm losing track of the original proposals too - wish they'd review that :(
I think the Geordie couple are hilarious but they seemed to mess up on all the livestock tasks as I recall, from the initial stock fencing (can't remember what their plan was ??? ) to handling challenges..
Was the allotment selling plan from the couple that went last week for the duck in a cage or am I as confused as I feel? :)

I wonder if any one on here knows people on the programme, as much as I did not like Heidi and her man??? (I too do not remember his name) she was sweet, I really think she and hubby only did it for a TV oppertunity, bless her!!

Very glad they went this week but still quite annoying that the other couple went the week before as think they were pretty good. As soon as he said sausage and mash I just thought what the hell are they thinking haha. On the whole thought the episode was rather pointless, just more cookery type things going on then how to be a salesperson.
And the older guy with his wooden ewe (slaps head) what a waste of time!! Was surprised how much money they took really with his messing about. Plus how he kept turning down the other guys help was pretty annoying, he doesnt always know best so seeing a old stubborn side to him now. Still want the older couple to win though at present he just needs to chill a bit more and dont waste time on silly things.
Looks like next week they are growing/harvesting something so maybe back to more farmy type things

Mind you, messing or mackeling around with bits of wood and bailing twine is often necessary in smallholding or farming ::) I remeber m y father in laws mackled up bits oh too well ::) I think he just needs direction and his wife is so lovely, she should be able to direct him!!!!!! We shall see!

I think Jimie just wanted anywhere to film 'cos who in their right mind would try and sell milk things to fishermen - especially when it's pouring with rain! The guy with the sausage and mash had a perfect idea for that days customers - shame he didn't make milk sausages but I didn't like the look of that semi mushy icecream. The old guy with his wooden sheep actually went down a bomb - my friends kids loved learning how to milk and he explained the whole thing really well - so I think he probly took quite a bit of money. I dont think the program really shows whats happening - thats why I've finally logged on rather than just reading evryone elses thoughts. :wave:

See I knew some one would have some info...why did know one think of Hot chocolate, full fat milk and a chunk of nice chocolate melted in it or whisked up, or milky coffee and smoothies????? SImple, mostly milk and easy!!!!

I suppose in some respects they were limited by time. You couldn't make butter or cheese in the time allotted and bangers'n'mash did sell well, but it didn't really fulfill the criteria, plus they were horrible.
The other pair should have gone at making the ice cream by hand right from the start rather than wasting the day trying to hire the machinery - that way it wouldn't have set with crystals in it and been much nicer. Sticking it in the smoothies was an inspired idea though.

Oh yea bangers and mash is a ideal product to sell just not really what they were asked to do lol. As soon as she said about making the icecream by hand i was thinking, "yea just make sure u stir it", "they are gonna remember to get it bk to stir arent they?", then once she put it in there i was just "omg they're not gonna stir it" lol.
Im just wondering if the couple that wins is already out there with their farm and been farming for a bit. Because if the last episode was filmed last summer surely they got to end of filming a while ago. Or is that an obvious assumption :D

I'm assuming 2011 is their funded year on the farm, as it was obviously filmed last summer :)
I was wondering whether anyone would go for goat or sheep milk lattes just hiring a coffee machine, as that plus ice cream or smoothies would cover all bases weather and customer wise and maybe something hot and edible to go with.. I guess if they knew it was a fishing contest it would be more trad food than lattes or even quiches, but it wasn't clear if they knew the venue or not and it looked like they were expecting general farmer market types again ???
Hot chocolate would be definitely a winner mind - has anyone used goat or sheep milk for HC or latte to compare it to cow versions? I haven't tho I take a soya latte occasionally and it's ok if made right ;)

Right result as far as i'm concerned as the two couples now in the final are the ones i picked out at the beginning despite my reservations that hairdresser & fireman might win it on entertainment value.

Just catching up on the last eipsode! Why did the old woman spend all morning making Jam when Jimmy specifically said don't make jam? ???
I am going off the old couple as they really do exactly what they want and don't take advice at all.
I would have liked to see them have to get up and feed and water all the animals they collected in the first few episodes, and then get on with the days tasks! ;D

I think she just homed in on 'products' and made a start. I couldn't really see why they didn't all pick like mad for a few hours at least instead of relying on inexperienced pickers who were clearly in no rush. None of them seem to know how to put a rush on. As for the chap who left, he seemed to spend too much time swanning around and none picking strawberries ::) And the missus was too concerned with glamming it and whether her nails would survive all this nasty work.
I am expecting the Geordies to win next week, if only because the older couple are really too old to make the very best use of the opportunity - not being ageist, but for Jimmy to invest (which I doubt he is ;D) he will want a long term return/effect.
Both these remaining couples are also the two I picked out at the beginning as being the most likely to become country folk - although how well this programme has tested that I'm not sure - well, I am - not much ;D ;D

Just caught this on i-player. Don't think any of 'em did very well - but I don't think anyone else would've done either. No choice over who works for them and no idea where they are to find a outlet for theyre strawberrys and I'd like to see Jimmy pick a mile of strawberries in 4 or 5 hours!! ???Was I dreaming or did the geordies reelly take two hours to make 20 choccy coated strawberrys?? :o The old man was actually right going to a wholesaler as he got more for those punnets than any of the others and surely one trip there used far less petrol than traipsing from pub to pub. Think it could go either way next week - the old couple are good with animals and cooking but the geordies are better at business. Bet we won't be shewn all of it though, only what the editors chose. ::)

Should have paid them per punnet as self employed - imagine the cost of putting them on the payroll for one day and paying per hour?
Have not watched the last three programs as lost interest totally - glad to see the two remaining couples are still in though. Hope the older two get it, making jam and bottled cordial was a brill idea as fresh fruit doesnt keep and any access could be used to make those products keep and sell at a later date.

Delighted at the result - partly cos I like those two couples and partly because after making such a song and dance about it being all about a business it would have been a mockery if he'd saved a couple who made a loss over two that made over £300 each ::)
Product making seemed uniformly a wasted effort this week - only selling lots of punnets made the results the way they were, tho the gift sets were a great idea just too slow in the making to be sold on the day ::) As for strawberry fudge disaster.. :o and the 2 hours to half dip £20 worth of chocolate strawberries ::)
Final looks like fun - tractor work and sheep spotted on the advance clip so real tasks not just cooking and selling - yay!
Older couple to win over the Geordies - I like them but can't get over their week one fencing disaster and other antics that put them in the bottom two more than once ;D

I think the older couple are more cut out for it. They don't panic. Geordie lass is all doom and gloom and has too much negativity.
Having said that, I don't think I'd give any of them a farm.

I need a new tractor in the first year, my own bailer, topper, feeders, water to every field, new roof on the barn, a new tractor shed, a ride on mower for the garden, the driveway re-tarmac'ed, new quads, cash for livestock - all pedigrees and special breeds, new fences round everything, post and rail round the house, brand new gates that are all hung by a specialist, pre-constructed animal handling equipment and areas to suit your animals, new chicken sheds - god the list would never be exhausted!!
If I had 'full financial backing' for a year there would be hundreds of contractors onsite for the whole year!!

the full financial backing will be a fixed amount of cash that they can use for the business.
the bit im still not clear on is whether they will own the farm or it will be rented and rent will be due after the first year cos rent in surry for 25 acres won't be cheap!!!

My guess is everything will be rented - the 4x4 car they drive, machinery - rent paid on rented house and land. All the funding will stop on day 366 with an option to continue the lease on the 'farm' and they will be struggling to make ends meet.

ok let me get this then is there anyone out there who would of not known they had a mile of strawberries about to rippen until the day before it was to late????not reallity atall.....if it was they would have known months before(when they planted them..lol..) giving them time to plan,employ and find outlets to sell to etc....... actually about as far from reallity as it can get me thinks!did the world just stop revolving after 48 hours so that the great products the older lady made were now worthless!and was this a planet where only slow lathargic students needed jobs??
wouldnt give any of them a farm as it will ruin their lives in the long run..as said above..they will have a fully paid for working holiday for a year and then on day 365 the real world will hit them with a bang and what do they do then?do they get to keep the profit they make(if they do)?or does that line the land owners pockets or the bbc's?......drives me nuts but its doing its job i guess..im still watching..even if i spend an hour sighing loudly and shouting less than pleasent words at jimmy!....... >:( ;D :D >:( ;D :D ;)

I love watching but it is a bit too much like a game show, I thought the gift stuff for the strawberries was a brilliant idea and those strawberries were being given away!! wish we'd have had the chance at a few!!!! I like both couples but I love the older couple, they do have a way with animals and I think would cope very well and enjoy things, my only problem is comparing them to my illnesses etc, I am certainly not fit enough for the heavy stuff and bending etc and that IS what farmings about, doing jobs in all weathers in not ideal circumstances, so the Jordie couple will be a bit fitter!!!!!!

I sometimes scorn at the tasks too but for me it's a tv show in the right direction :farmer:
