Title: range cooker wanted
Post by: northfifeduckling on January 02, 2011, 06:22:35 pm
Does anyone know of a supplier for affordable small multi (solid) fuel range cookers with back boiler - Central Scotland (Fife)? ? I want it to replace the open fire but want to be able to cook/bake with it if it's running anyway. Don't seem to be lucky on line...Some prices are a bit astronomical, too,.. :o :&>

I had a re conditioned aga some years ago, loved it as it ran the heating in the bathroom but  unless you have a small cottage where you can utilise the water or heat, they can be expensive as they cannot be turned up instantly!! Iused to put stale loafs in for the rabbits and forget them for days as they have a good seal so no smells!!!!! Would love one again but my life has changes so need practicle!!

We always had a rayburn in our house which heated the kitchen (no radiator in there) and also heated the water. I do like solid fuel rayburn, but they are a bit messy when it comes to cleaning out. No more so than an open fire I suppose. Great for baking, but as Sandy says the seal is good- it is possible to pop something in and forget it!

The rail on the front is great for perching on in the winter, all members of our family used to fight over it!

I used to iron stuff on the tops and we had a sheila made rail above to dry stuff to a crisp!!! I often forgot the chicken cooking in it!!!

Hang on!!! we are building a little annex, the trouble is the building is one level and there is someone living next door at a higher level!! I wondered if there would be any way to put a solid fuel type cooker in our annex in the future as we can certainly get logs easily!!!

How's Freecycle in your area? I'd stick an advert in the wanted section and see if anything comes of it.  :)

Our posh friends with Aga's all seem to have a conventional hob and oven which they actually use for the cooking alongside the Aga which they use for interior design

When we moved to Clackmannan (def NOT posh) we had a gas range type cooker and I wanted a solid fry pan so I went to the aga shop in Glasgow to see what they had..what snobs they were, the very tiny cheapo pan was over £50 so I bought a good old one from Lidi!!!!  I like serviceable NOT posh!!

Yes, when i built my house I was adviser to do that but I thought it was a waste and would cost an extra £5000 for very little benefit, so I opted for a high tech digital thing instead.  New owners love it.  Not all they're cracked up to be IMHO

I have had one (in the cottage we renovated) but I found it far too inflexible.  Heat when you didn't need it - had to leave it off in the summer altogether.  So had to use a camping stove to cook on.  That's why I changed.  But they do look lovely, just not practical, and far too expensive for what they do. NFD - check ebay !
My Dad (ebay king  ::)) got an Essey range - that's probably not how you spell it ! with a back boiler for under £100, okay so it wasn't brand new - but it works. And don't be put off if they look a bit scabby a shot blast and re-coat isn't that expensive (especially if you talk really nice to my OH  ;))

We put a new Wamsler into our place - and it was expensive - especially with a heat store but its done excellent service over the cold spell and it'll pay for itself over about 6-8 years given we'll not pay for most of our wood vs putting in an oil-fired boiler which was the only real alternative.

I don't know if it has a backboiler... But brand new and
under £1000 can't be bad!!

It's 6kw which is pretty good. I've recently installed a 6kw woodburner downstairs and it heats much of the downstairs and some heat wafts upstairs.... I'm hoping
to buy a cooking range
like this soon to heat the back of the house... A kitchen/diner/bathroom/utility extension which is badly insulated!

That looks nice actually.

I have to say I do agree with comments about aga's etc. We had a "Stanley range" when we moved in here- with a convential oven beside it as well! The amount of oil it used was incredible- and as you say putting out heat at a time when you didn't need it! We switched the heating system over to an external combi boiler and our oil comsumption is more than a 1/3 less.

Solid fuel cookers are, obviously an entirely different thing, and if you have the time and energy, they are great.

certainly looks nice and not to bad a price as well  we had a wellstood solid fuel cooker when we changed it it had been badly fitted changed for a Stanley  to run the central heating dick Turpin installed it and serviced it until we located a better engineer  and cheaper  we can give his number to anybody thats needing it Stanley's are ineficiant as are agas and they are dearer to buy install and service

Thanks, Johnmac, I'll get in touch with them if they have what we need. They look nice (not so bulky) and cheap, too!
I'm checking ebay all the time but nothing in our area - can't travel to Dorset, lol...
Our cottage actually had one in the room where I want it now (living room) until they built the extention(kitchen and bathroom) in thge 50s and converted it into an open fireplace with back boiler. Abosolutely useless for efficiency. We need the back boiler as it used to be 2 cottages and we have 2 hot water systems! I'd love to make most use of the water heating and be able to bake if it's running ayway! Work can't be more than at the mo with the open fire  ;D :&>

Glad I could be of help! The web company have a very good reputation and can design installation for free. There are many cheap generic ranges on eBay... But they all look flimsy and cheap. Must admit, I would love an esse ironheart... More for the looks than anything.... But at £2500 it's a bit much!

This little woodburning range looks great for the price!

We've got an Aga Rangemaster cooker with two electric ovens and an induction hob. Love it. They heat up and cool down really quickly. We have no mains gas so I didn't relish the thought of an electric hob but the induction one is very good. And sooooo easy to clean.  ;D

The traditional Aga is lovely but I don't think it's very practical nowadays and often not very sound environmentally, unless it burns wood. But I don't think they are very efficient.

Romantica is also ideal for a large tent or yurt

Liked this idea - might need a camel or two to carry it though  ;)

I just get the Mrs to carry it when we are out 'Yurting'

95kgs is nothing to her!

I'd only ever buy an Aga. It's the best looking range style cooker by far. Most of the 'wannabe Agas' are horrid. The one in the pic above is ugly.

Ok, so maybe it is a snobbery thing  :-[ ,  they are expensive to run and the older models take ages to heat up, but I LOVE them.     They really throw out the heat so it's not on in the summer, hence the need to have another 'standard' cooker.

If you need to heat water and run radiators, go for a Rayburn. Although the ovens are bigger, they are smaller on the exterior too. It's the only second choice in my book.

PS: Forgot to say look at 'that' popular online auction site, I thought the prices seemed quite low now as they are out of fashion.
