Title: Bitter / Toxic Courgettes
Post by: Womble on July 27, 2020, 07:13:12 pm
Hi folks, to my surprise, it doesn't look as though this has been covered before, but beware, apparently there are some dodgy courgette seeds doing the rounds this year which taste bitter and may even be poinsonous. (https://www.sciencebase.com/science-blog/the-attack-of-the-poisonous-zucchini.html)

My Sister just rang to say she's had to bin a beef hotpot because it was utterly inedible, and had I heard that some seeds had been recalled? Well no, actually!

Be careful folks!  :o

Interesting.  And it's not April 1st (I checked!)  My seeds came from Mr Fothergills and we've had a huge and bumper crop of bright yellow fruits (I was expecting green but I'm not complaining)  Our septic tank is not overflowing so I think our batch is fine.  Thanks for the tip off.

I hate to tell you [member=4333]Fleecewife[/member] but I am sure Fothergills was the brand mentioned with the toxicity...

You have to lick the cut surface and if it's bitter, throw it out.

Link (https://www.gardensillustrated.com/news/mr-fothergills-courgette-stomach-bitter/) to article and yes, it was Fothergills

Yes I know that  :D  My point was that in spite of coming from Mr Fothergills, my seeds were fine as proved by eating loads of the courgettes with no sign of the runs  :innocent:   Had they been bitter I would have ditched the lot.
