Title: Spraying creosote
Post by: Penninehillbilly on June 23, 2020, 04:19:20 pm
When we had our fence put in by contractor, he suggested spraying creosote round the bases in spring.
We've just ordered traditional creosote for some new fencing, but OH wants to spray old posts.
Anyone any advice/recommendations for a sprayer? He's thinking 12v or we could get a small genny down there. Apparently ordinary sprayer will melt.
Been looking at a previous post, we have a big variation in quality of old posts, some rotted right through, some as sturdy as new.

Real traditional creosote ?
Dont spray .
Reason one , its nasty stuff not all of the spray will go on the post.
Reason two , a brush will apply more to the wood and be of more use than a spaying and all the creosote will end up on the post not on the breeze.

I thought you couldn't buy it any more?

You can still buy it for proffesional use such as agriculture.

I think his idea is just to spray round the base of the posts, so it runs down a bit and protects at ground level.

2nd that.......have seen chemical burns from creosote, not pleasant. Gloves long sleeves & care required when using so wouldn’t recommend spraying. Bloody good stuff though so must be on a ban list somewhere
