Hi , just hatched some locally sourced fertile eggs. Getting chick crum is a bit of a problem at the mo so they’ve been having what basically what my dad and grandad used. Mashed up boiled egg yolks , weetabix ground to a crumb, and a mix of shredded garden herbs and worms from the compost heap. Is this okay for the next few weeks until they’re ready for growers pellets.? I must say dad and grandad seemed to know their stuff and always seemed to do well with hens.

In the past I have occasionally run out of chick crumbs (bad planning ::) ). In order to feed the chicks I have ground down growers or layers pellets in the food processor or liquidiser. The chicks ate it quite happily and it didn't seem to do them any harm.

Hi thanks, I’ve done that before???? The question was more about would the old fashioned method do them any harm and could I use it until they’re ready to take them on to growers pellets.
