Have a word with NFU mutual perhaps. we have goats, chickens etc and our goats used to escape loads (touching shed loads of wood now!!) we don't have public liability insurance where we are but I guess it depends where you are situated. ie. are you next to a public place (shopping centre, school or something?) do people come to visit your animals for any reason?

Stuart Benger and Co do a Smallholder package.

My understanding is that if you have pigs (or sheep, cattle, etc) you must have a holding number and therefore be registered as a smallholding. Public Liability insurance is not expensive but is great for your peace of mind.

You definitely need a holding number for pigs.

we have a CPH number and herd number for the pigs, and have registered chickens with defra -although we didn't neeed to
thanks for responses so far- don't think they can escape (famous last words) as we have double fences
-
o yes they can. got up this morning and big pig and little pig (we were determind not to give them names) have done a very good job on our front. funny they don't mind being caught unlike our first lot.

You are registered as a smallholding then - that's all it means.
