One of my pet sheep has a problem with one of her claws, which is making her lame. The vet did mention as one of the options, removal of the offending claw. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of this with their sheep. Thank you

Have seen claw/digit removal in cows which heal well but not seen it in sheep. What’s wrong with the digit ?
-
There is some degeneration of the bone in one claw, Twizzel.

Tworks well

I guess most farmers would cull rather than take a digit off due to the costs involved but if your sheep are pets that wouldn’t be such an issue. If your vet is happy then I’d take their guidance and do it :fc:

Thanks for the replies. Just wondered Me if you could tell me any more about the procedure. Is it done by local anesthetic? How long is the recovery period? What about pain relief? I'll obviously talk to my vet about it, but it's useful to have 'known' someone who's had experience of it with their sheep. Thank you.

Fairly common in cows and you can stick on a block to replace the removed digit ,uncommon in sheep but I had a very good pedigree ram done many years ago and he still carried on working for years

Lower limb to sleep with local and tornuquete (can't spell), bit of sedation, cheesewire it off, not much blood, wrap it up with bandages and keep dry for a few weeks and they heal over very well. Antibs and Metacam for a few days, they are probably less painful within a few days with it off than with decaying bones under pressure with it on

Thank you again for your replies. Thank you Me for the useful information. I now know a little bit more about the procedure. Would you say it was quite a safe operation? Thank you.
