Title: New weaners
Post by: OMGitsapiglet on November 01, 2019, 05:25:29 pm
Hey,
About to bring home some birth notified British Lop weaner gilts. They aren't registered.
Plan was to breed from them with a registered boar when they are old enough.
If they make perfect piglets - for breed standard - can these then be registered? Or no? Birth notified. Isnt it like saying two deaf people wont necessarily make a deaf child? That's a rough analogy but do you get my point?
They'll still be pedigree lops wont they?
Thanks.

Did you buy/pay for meat weaners or for breeding weaners?

If you bought breeding weaners it should have reflected in the price and they should already meet breeding standards. They have been birth notified so should have a tattoo. Only a breeder can register their pigs. If you breed your BN weaners with a registered boar you would not be able to BN or register the offspring. In a broad sense they would be pure but they would not be pedigree.

Yes, you can have two pedigree parents and no, not all the litter will be breed standard. In a litter  you may only get one or two for registration. You might get more but never a whole litter. One of the first things to check is underline and many a good shape pig will fail on underline.

Just a thought - if you haven't picked these up yet, can you get in touch with the breeder and ask if they can / should be pedigree registered for you?

If the answer is "yes of course, and they're good enough", then that's fine. If the answer is "no, I wouldn't", then surely that's telling you that you should be eating these ones and looking elsewhere for your breeding stock?

There will probably be an additional cost if they are to be registered!

It costs £5 to register a BL. There is no cost to BN.

Hello and Help!  Along with two friends, I am about to get 3 Tamworth weaners for the freezer and am confused about which is the best feed to start with.....?  Also, is it sensible to buy in bulk when storage container is likely to be a (clean) wheelie bin - limited capacity.   I read somewhere that rats etc., love animal feed and would rapidly find their way to our supplies for a free feast so leaving the extra bags on pallets unopened might be futile...thanks.

Ask the breeder what feed they are on.

Yes, always store animal feed in a rat proof bin. You can get 6 x 25 kilo bags in a wheelie bin. Talk to your supplier and see if you can buy say 20 bags in one go but collect weekly what you can store.

Hi Contessa, We put a free ad in our local paper asking for non-working chest freezers and ended up with four of them..... one of which even works! They work really well as rat-proof storage bins. HTH!
