Title: Milling own food
Post by: esto2019 on October 21, 2019, 09:09:51 am
Has anyone else milled there own feed? if so what mix did you use? I was planning 30% Wheat 30% Barley 10% Soya meal and 10% Oats?!

Back in the 1950s and '60s my father milled his own pig feed.  I don't remember the proportions (which varied between pigs of different ages)  but I do remember that we used grass meal, and for the weaners, milk powder replaced a proportion of the grain.  We didn't add oats as we didn't grow it, but I think soya was in there too.  We had a big 'mill and mix' machine in the barn, and stored the meal in cwt hessian sacks.

I think this question has been asked before on here so you might find the answer in old posts or google for loads of info. People swear by this feed and that feed but before I was swayed to mixing my own I would want to see a finished carcase. Whatever home mix you go with you will need to add minerals.
