Title: Alarm call
Post by: RCTman on September 15, 2019, 07:28:01 pm
While painting a fence this afternoon I heard the all too familiar alarm call from my cockerel about fifty yards away, I shouted, the dogs barked and up from the chicken pen came a Goshawk, he perched on the fence  and then flew away. Lucky escape those chooks had. Now looking for a big net to cover in the whole area.

Try yellow washing line tied to posts in and around the enclosure. The idea is to break potential flight lines which (so far) has worked for us. Chickens need cover to bolt to so anything of that nature will work.

A goshawk! - I've never seen one for real even though there are supposed to be plenty here.  8)   Lucky for the hens you scared it off, but I'm sure it will be back.  Given that goshawks can fly fast through woodland, I'm not sure just breaking up the flight path would be sufficient to stop it getting in the hen pen.
