Hi
whats anyone paying for hay (small bales) this year, mine jumped up from £3.50 - £5 last year due to the winter and drought
i see many a farmer on social media boasting at how well they have done with the hay crop this year but the prices dont seem to be coming down too fast

Hay should be a bit cheaper this year but if you’re in an area with lots of horses it’ll probably still be expensive ! If you can get round bales or big square bales they are much cheaper than small.

Prices around Aberdeenshire are £3.50 to £5 small bale and anything from £12 to £25 for large round bales.

Good quality meadow hay is selling for £50 for a large 250kg bale here, which I think worked out at 20p per kg
If you do the maths, you will find it is substantially cheaper to buy in bulk even if you only have a few animals, or larger bales as twizzel says, which last for longer as well.

round bale hay in my area - West Wales, has dropped from £45 a bale to £25 a bale this year because there is so much about. The weather was perfect for it so everyone made it. I haven't be able to afford small bales for years, lol!

Contractors certainly look to have lots of big bales in, a farmer friend has made loads hoping to make lots of money, but another farmer says a lot of farmers will be stuck with it tnis year.
All depends on the winter I suppose :)
We tend to feed big bale over winter, (opened and fed by pulling portions off), small bales as grass starts to come through.
