Title: milk fever/magnesium deficiency
Post by: Scotsdumpy on August 28, 2019, 08:32:37 am
Just a heads up for any cattle keepers - please watch out for the early signs of milk fever in newly calved cows. Yesterday,  one of my girls seemed reluctant to get up - once she did she was extremely wobbly and staggery. I called the vet immediately and he administered calcium and magnesium Intravenously.  She's survived the night although still a bit wobbly, but eating and pooing and letting her calf suckle.
If you leave treatment cows can die in a very short space of time.
Hopefully,  I've caught her in time but the vet said that there is high incidences of calcium and magnesium deficiencies this year.
