Title: Documenting home slaughter
Post by: NewLifeOnTheFarm on August 02, 2019, 11:32:45 am
Hi all,

We have home slaughtered our first lamb with the help of neighbours. Nothing has gone to waste, we have even made haggis, it's been a great experience even if a tad emotional until we got into swing of it. Just wondered about documentation. Do I just update my register with DEAD and document as home slaughter?

Thanks

I think in England you would register in the movement book as a death and then attach the paperwork for disposal of the risk material- you say nothing went to waste but what happened to the bits you can’t eat? They must have been disposed of legally.

Yes, gone with the knacker man. But we didn't get a certificate, I'll chase him up!

Although from my understanding of the rules, in Scotland at least, in a sheep under 12 months, there is no specific risk material, so does that mean that if you can find use for the head etc, it can be used without issue? I would quite like to decorate a sheep skull one day!

As long as it's just for home consumption it's fine.

What about in England? Can we home slaughter for home consumption? What paperwork needs to be completed and who do we notify?
