Title: CPH number/ Rural payments Advice for new smallholder please
Post by: hannah_D on April 07, 2019, 02:24:46 pm
 Hi,

We've just bought a 34 acre smallholding in north wales. While we do up the house we're going to allow a local farmer to graze his sheep on the land with a grazing licence, we're going to have him off the land as part of the arrangement so that he is not a tenant.

We plan to have a few chicken ourselves, but nothing big for a few years.

Would anyone know if we can claim any rural payments if there is a farmer on the land? Also, do we need a single business identifier as well as a CPH or can we manage with just a CPH if we're not going to be selling anything?

Thanks al!  :&> :sheep: :farmer:

We've been in contact with them recently regarding getting a second CPH for pet food production and they were very insistent on us producing our SBI to deal with us (we couldn't as the paperwork is god-knows-where), so i would assume you'll need that too

As I understand it to claim SFP you need to have 'entitlements' and other than for a few special cases such as youngsters getting into farming these have to be purchased and are traded like any other asset. Their value fluctuates but as the whole scheme could cease post Brexit their value could fall.

You can still apply for separate schemes like Woodland Creation etc.

Best seeking specialist advice or join the NFU or the Farmers Union for Wales?

thanks. I've just spoken to a solicitor about this and he's going to put me in touch with the local NFU rep for BPS.

I'll give the CPH line a try, we'll see what they say about needing the SBI or not!

You can only apply for SFP if you have the land at your disposal, so you can't claim whilst you have a tennant, as the land is at their disposal.

Not strictly true, it depends on the tenancy arrangement. The key thing is that the claimant must be able to manage - and make management decisions about - the land.  In many tenancies, that is the tenant not the landowner.

Join Farming Connect if you are in Wales …. you will be able to apply for Glastir small grants for specific projects but not BFP (your grazier  could claim this)
