Title: Smallholding Insurance
Post by: Olong82 on December 03, 2018, 04:33:12 pm
I know its been talked about before but dont seem to be able to find an answer to my question which is...

Can you get just public liability insurance for some animals?

I have 2 sheep and for some of the year 3 pigs and a hand full of chickens not much but keeps me happy. I don't want the full insurance of a smallholding as we already have house insurance and we only have 1.5 acres and it cost £200/300.

You can get it for bees through bbka for £30 is there a similar organisation for small holders? And if not why not.

Ok help much appreciated.

I think bbka is only if the bees have specific diseases and have to be destroyed. I think the insurance bit is less than £30.  Most of it goes to keeping bbka functioning and I don't consider it to be money well spent.
We use Isca Barum for the smallholding

As far as block insurace is concerned not that I know of, however, there is an organisation that has recently been set up to represent and assist smallholders in Scotland - Smallholding Scotland is a Scottish Charity and I am Treasurer.

I am at present negotiating our own cover with NFU but I will enquite as to whether a blanket scheme could be set up similar to the one run by the BBKA

Please let me know if anyone would be interested in this

I haven't exchanged on my smallholding yet. Once it happens I am planning to have a range of livestock so imagine I will need insurance about which I currently know nothing so I am interested.

Doganjoe as a small smallholder I would be very interested in a blanket policy. My home insurance covers all but the animals and there associated personal liability. Seems on my own the best I can do is £210 but that covers £10000 of farm buildings which I just don't have.

Ditto [member=26320]doganjo[/member] . Currently we just have a standard household policy and good fences, but I'd like to get something better. When I got quotes last year though, the additional premiums quoted were just ludicrous - way out of proportion to any actual risk.
