Title: Uneven bagging in heifer
Post by: ferdi on October 11, 2018, 01:16:59 pm
hi All

Have got a heifer due to calve for  first time in 2 weeks, she has started to bag up in the last 10 days but one side of her udder is now quite tight, while the other side is still fairly flaccid ( though growing) , am starting to get a bit paranoid about summer mastitis, so can someone tell me if this unevenness is fairly normal in first time calvers.
Many thanks

This is normal and the side may change depending on how she has laid.

as long as there's no heat, hardness or redness to it, she should be fine.

Often a dairy bred heifer will get oedema in her udder making it hard and red, this too is normal in good milking lines.  Beef cattle do not seem to get this the same.
