Title: Impacted Crop
Post by: Andt on September 26, 2010, 07:55:45 pm
Whilst feeding my hens some mixed corn today I noticed my RIR hen was not her usual boisterous self, I picked her up and felt her crop which felt very full and quite hard. I massaged the crop for a few minutes and put her down to see how she reacted.  I had to pop out for an hour but on my return I went over and was met by a hen that had a lot more urgency about her (running to the gate when I opened it), I picked her up again and the crop still seemed full and quite hard so I got a syringe body (no needle) and a baking powder and water solution (I had no olive oil and neither did my local shop) and syringed 3ml down in to her crop and massaged for a few minutes until the crop contents were soft.
I put the hen back on the ground and she immediately had a drink of water with ACV in it and then proceeded to go into the coop to roost (I think she was pouting).

Hopefully tomorrow she'll be back to her old self.
