Title: Beer
Post by: woollyval on September 16, 2010, 08:25:09 am
I have been rearing pigs for the freezer for donkeys years and in the past when we had access to gallons of milk we fed them on milk and barley. Well we found out this year the local pub was going through gallons of slops so......
We gave them a container to fill ;)
3 pigs 7 months old, 10 pints a day with barley and veg with a bit of finisher.....wow :o the meat is amazing and the taste.... 8) Killed out at 60kg with no more than 2cm back fat (I like a bit of fat for taste) and were Tamworth x Mangaliza. Bacon curing at the moment!

A friend of mine who does a lot of home brew gives the left over mash to the pigs (they love it) It would be interesting to study the effect of alchohol on different species. As a child I was facinated by drunk wasps feeding on fermenting windfall apples. They seems to behave much like drunk people

Sounds great.  Just don't take them to slaughter with a hangover ....

I first read that as "fed pigs on donkey's milk" !! ;D
We gave a reluctant sow 2 pints of Guiness to persuade her up into the trailer. She staggered in willingly enough but was too drunk to get out at the other end, we couldn't get her to her feet!

I have to say, I strained and bottled some of my blackcurrant bacardi last week, and what better use did I find for the leftover blackcurrants, but to feed them to the pigs! Sadly, I haven't got access to slops. But they don't have love goats milk.

mmm sound a good idea, but how did you get round the rule about nothing from the kitchen/household going to the pigs?
