I'm thinking about getting 2 horses in several years but every time i ask people who have horses how tall mine and my boyfriends horses should be they have all given me a different answer so i was wondering if anyone knew how many hands my horse should be i am 5 foot 6 and what size my boyfriends horse should be my boyfriend is 6 foot 1 :horse: ???

A Dales pony ;D ( roughly about 14hh) or any of the other large Native breeds would do you fine, they have a large barrel that takes up the leg so taller people find they can ride them no bother

oh well thanks thts a great help some people have said i may need a 16hh horse but i thought that was too big for me and dales are beautiful i do like the more chunky looking horses. And is it 14hh even for my boyfriend who is 6 foot 1 he really like the clydesdale do u know much about them.

I have a friend who had a Clydesdale and she was a lovely horse to ride. My daughter has a part Shire and he also has a lovely laid back attitude.
Get some experience of riding different types and you will find one that suits you.

Dito above, i have a 13.2/3 new forest and a 16.1 tbred and look and feel fine on both im a tiddler at 5'2" and weigh just under 9 stone
Id say weight is more of an issue when choosing a horse/pony, and with whatever you feel best on ;) my new forest could carry a lot more than me but my tbred doesnt like weight on him

id agree its alot to do with weight as well as height i love my cobs iv only had horses for 22 yrs but sold up for a few and just got back i got a welsh sect b x gypsey cob she has taken the welsh side alot the mum was 13.2 welsh b and dad was 14.2/3 she is about 16 mths i think and she will be broken to drive this winter well starting to but she has more growing to do so it wont be no hard work for her. but as i bought her for my 3 yr old daughter she will learn to drive 1st then to ride later find the breed you like and look at a few before you make your choice as some dont like weight some do some dont like tall people some do so shop around work out what you want to do etc and ask loads of questions before you buy and if poss get a horsey friend to go with you

Probably how good a rider you are matters too. A large good rider will feel less heavy to the horse than a lightweight but unbalanced rider.
A Highland pony can carry up to 17 stone and although the breed standard says 14.2 maximum, you can get oversized ponies. Mine is 15.1
