Post by: Rosemary on September 09, 2010, 07:57:55 am
I thought about joining but I have difficulty thinking of myself as a "proper" farmer. Anyone else on here members?

Hi Rosemarie,

we're members of NFUS.  We're also insured with NFU Mutual, mainly because they offer public liability & machinery insurance as part of the household & buildings insurance, but you don't need to be a member of NFUS to insure with NFU Mutual.

I think membership costs vary with the size of the business - we pay very little as a smallholder, but still get invitations to all the talks & farm visits etc.  Also a glossy magazine with updates on legislation etc.  As a member you also get free telephone consultations on legal or financial matters - I used this to look into VAT registration, which helped me decide it was not for me.

I get a lot of support & advice from neighbouring farmers & friends, and although they don't know (or really care) whether I'm a member ot their Union, I feel that I should add my support to farming in general.  Every union depends on a strong membership base, who may not individually gain much.  Plus, the magazine is interesting at times.

We are insured by NFU for reasons as mentioned above but I also joined the CLA, which is for landowners and give talks and provide frees services too.

If you have a safety assessment done through them for any reason you might have the pleasure of meeting Mr Plums and I'll get him to bring you a bottle of his wine  ;) lol

We used to be members when we had a bigger smallholding, and an agricultural based business (a nursery) not any more though.

We have (just today!) taken out car insurance with NFU and will (when up for renewal) also do the house/smallholding with them - same reason as above, includes livestock.

Not sure about membership though - might just check it out.

We insured our caravan with them and I've just had a quote for horse insurance. I quite like the idea of being able to talk to the insurance man - see the whites of his eyes, so to speak.

I think I'll check it out. Do you get a discount on insurance if you are a member?
