Call me strange, but there's something about these buildings that I really like.

I want one ! ;D

well thats Frodo and Bilbo baggins sorted !!!! lol. They are good ...but maybe they are a bit like a not so eco friendly roundhouse really ...
I would rather go for a willow framework woven and then daubed with clay , ie wattle and daub !!, then thatched with wheat straw or similar...all grown on site ... All cupboards and interior fittings from freecycle or similar and windows from the same or from double glazing window makers skips ... now that would be eco friendly and FREE .
cheers

I love the O Pod - would be a perfect office for Dan. IMHO ;D

How do you put things against or hang cupboards, pictures and shelves on the walls? My OH like things in lines so he would be stuggling!!!! I think they are cute too and I first thought "Telly Tubby" or another baby programme but now you said houses for Hobbits..I could have one in the woods!

My OH made this as a sheep shelter for my orphans - the theme wasn't eco just anything that could stand up to the wind here!!

That looks great! What are the panels made of? and the bottom base. Did it just have an opening away from the wind?

Thank you for the youtube link Russ - that's my dream for a summer cottage, just blending into the woods. Wish the windows were round though..... OH is building me a wool shed which has got to the woodhenge stage so far, but to fit in the available space it is rectangular. Will show him the film.

Russ, I was expecting "In the night garden" :D BUT, how beautiful...my OH would never let me have all those logs!!! I suppose we could build a much smaller version as a log store ???

if you can't have the logs , then there are other ways of doing it !!! Mud and straw can be used , either on a frame of willow or just on it's own (thick walls/cob ) . You don't have to add the horse or cow manure to the mix if you don't want to , it works just as well without it. The reason it was in the original daub/cob mixes, was they used animals ie horses or cows , to tread and puddle the clay and straw . It isn't there for any other reason , it is basically one of those urban myths that have stuck, that they mixed it in deliberately , they didn't ...they just didn't bother to scoop the crap out when the animals did what they do, while mixing the daub. Funny how even 'experts' now claim how it is needed in the mix ?
I have mixed and applied tons of daub at different times , and it has made no difference if manure was used in it or not , it just smells better if you don't use it !!! , goes on the same and lasts the same, maybe even longer lasting, as clay doesn't compost ... crap does !!! ;D
Happy building ....
cheers

I used to have a wattle and daub summer house when I was married, he still has the same house and I believe it is listed, here is a photo taken 3 years ago!! you can just about see it with a thatched roof....the daub is ideal home for bee's http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu232/pryde/2006_0716trial31111100090017.jpg[/img]](http://i651.photobucket.com/albums/uu232/pryde/2006_0716trial31111100090017.jpg) (http://[IMG)

Sorry forgot to mention it's not actually finished - shock horror!! - the panels are exterior ply, silicone to seal, 4"x6" from the reclamation yard for the lower layer, slids to do and then 86 felt triangles to cut to felt like you would slate - no floor just the earth and we guessed at south east for the door - that was before the wind today but it's still there!!!!
