Title: crazy carrots
Post by: sabrina on August 29, 2010, 06:29:45 pm
Advice needed on what I have done wrong. Started lifting some carrots the other day and they all look as if they have been plaited. Normal head at ground level but each one has 3/4 carrots all wrapped round each other. They are a good size just this strange shape.  ???

'Fanged' carrots are caused by planting them in too fertile a ground, they have no need to search for goodness so instead of making one root reaching down they spread out enjoying all the fertility around them.  Stoney ground can also cause fanging. It is usual to plant carrot seed in a bed that was fertilised for last years crops only, ie potatoes or legumes. Same goes for all root crops.

thanks for getting back to me. The ground had rotted horse manure added over the winter so will not do this next year where carrots will grow. :)
