Title: Greetings from Falkirk way!
Post by: ballingall on September 10, 2008, 11:14:26 pm

Hello everyone,

I live on a smallholding (about an acre all told) with my mother. We breed and show pedigree dairy goats (most breeds), at the present we have 11 goats. We also have 3 dogs, 3 cats, 3 apricot call ducks, and a trio of gold pencilled hamburgh bantams.

My mother is a qualified vet, no longer practicing, but I have to say she is most useful! We used to live just outside Kinross (Perthshire) on a smallholding of about 4 acres. My father also had his own nursery, where we used to produce most vegetables, although that was when I was pretty young! We have kept sheep, pigs, cattle and geese in the past as well. Thinking of maybe getting a couple of orphan lambs in the spring to rear on the goats milk and put into the freezer come the autumn. So miss having lamb in the freezer every year.

Hello, I never really thought about a small holding but now I fancy a bit of land, I love the rough and ready life and I think it keeps you fit as you have no time to sit and watch TV with a bag of crisps, plus, fresh air and great home grown food, good for the sole. maybe one day, for now I will settle for my chickens in the garden and a few herbs.

Hi and welcome!

You might be interested in the Forth Valley and West Fife Smallholders Association www.smallholders.info; you would be made most welcome there too.

Hi and welcome, a vet in the family is certainly a good thing, my 15yr old has decided this is the path she wants to follow- so fingers crossed for this long journey ahead of her.

Hello and welcome,

I used to breed and show goats - many years ago now with my mother (prefix Greendams). I think I remember you.

I live in Clackmannanshire and work in Falkirk. Sadly no goats now.

Hi Beth,

Don't worry I am the same. My name is Alice. I work in Maddiston now, which I think is quite close to where you are.

Hi Alice,

Yes Maddiston is very close to us, you should pop down and visit sometime. Although the boys are in full "smell" mode at the moment, which makes it not quite as attractive in the goat shed!
