Title: Making feed
Post by: Tweedle on September 06, 2008, 05:47:51 pm
I usually purchase pig and sow pellets from the local feed store but I am kind of curious about what is actually in there as far as grains and what would be a good mix of grains if I was to start mixing my own feed at home for them? Any ideas or what works for everyone?

Not sure myself, but the label should give you some idea. On a very simple level (and this goes back to my past as a farmer mixing cattle and sheep feed), if I had barley at 10% protein and concentrate at 40%, I would alter the mix ratio to achieve my desired end protein %age. Say I wanted 15% end product, I'd mix concentrate into the barley at a ratio of 5 units barley to 1 unit concentrate. ((5 x 10 = 50) + (1 x 40))=90. 90/6= 15%
Hope this is a  :) and not a  ???

I've just looked up Starting With Pigs by Andy Case. He says a mix of 10 parts coarse wheatmeal, 8 parts barley meal, 1 part soya meal, 1 part fish meal plus minerals.  Replace the fish meal with more soya meal three-quarters of the way to pork weight and then towards the end of finishing drop the soya meal back to one part and increase the barley meal by one part.

I'd be really interested to see how you get on.
