Hi,
I'd like some advice if anyone can help. One of my saanen's has given birth to two kids (She needed a bit of help as they presented awkwardly). She is still dangling her cord behind her and has not delivered her placenta yet (6 hours now). Some book say 12 hours and other 24 hours until the placenta might be delivered. When should I start worrying ?
Cheers

If goats are like sheep, then it will eventually be passed as the young suckle, or she treads on the trailing end. Never be tempted to pull it out yourself. Our rule is that if we haven't got it 24 hours later then we give a long acting antibiotic to cover her for internal infection and repeat after 3 days. There is also the option of something like Synulox which is put inside the uterus, but usually if there is residual infection after the afterbirth is out.
If there is a foul smell then consult your vet straight away.
I'm sure some goat folk will be along with goatier experience.

Thanks, As we are nearing 24 hours now I've chatted with the vet and they will comeand review and consider if we should give an antibiotic. (And just to check that there is not a triplet in there as she still looks quite big - though can't feel anything on bouncing. ???)

It may take a few days for it to come out now, as the cervix will have closed. You will need her covered with a long-acting Antibiotic (although where for sheep it would be given every three days for goats every two days is recommended for something like Alamycin LA). Hopefully there is not a third one inside, but they don't always look deflated afterwards.... it fools me every time one of mine does that! Did you go in and check or just bounce?

Hi Anke, The cervix has closed I could not pass a finger today. The vet came, a nice guy from Croatia. This was lucky as he had a fair degree of experience with goats. He couldn't feel another one inside so i hope that this is not the case. She has had a long-acting antibiotic so fingers crossed thinsg will go OK
Cheers

Keep an eye on her body temperature - at the first sign of it going up she will need more ABs.

Talking to our vet today as she was out assisting with one if our goats, she said it can be a week before the placenta is delivered in some cases!
