Title: Milk out before kidding?
Post by: westcoastcroft on March 20, 2018, 06:50:34 pm
Hi all

I have a doe due to kid on the 28th. She was dried off aroind new year but had a bit of a full udder left. She stopped producing in Jan as it stopped getting fuller (was just milkin her a little to stop it getting tight) but still seems to have a wee bit inside. Should I milk her out now to so there is room for the colostrum or just leave her be?

Just thinking if there is residual milk in there might be best of get it out - but on other hand not wanting to disturb her or stimulate colostrum..

Anybody got any ideas.

Thanks

Just leave it. Older girl often have a wee udder left once dry. If she is due in a weeks' time she will already be making her "new" udder, and "old" milk will have been re-absorbed a while ago.

Thanks for the replies. Will leave alone as suggested.
