Title: Market/fete selling of goods
Post by: plumseverywhere on July 31, 2010, 12:19:25 pm
I've been invited to sell some of my handmade goats milk soaps at a country and western festival, very local to here next weekend.  have got dozens of soaps ready and the lady running the event has suggested that I also bring along some of my hens eggs, plums from our orchard and anything else I normally sell at the farm gate.

Are there any regs' if I do this? have tried googling but its all double dutch. am just wondering if taking eggs away to sell differs in any way to me 'delivering' them to friends who buy int he playground at drop off time etc?

Hiya,
According to my book "Modern Free Range" by Michael Roberts when you're selling eggs direct to the public - whether it be at your gate, on a door to door basis or at a market stall the same regulations apply to all, so you should be fine to go ahead with it. You're not allowed to grade them, but interestingly, it says you ARE permitted to clean them.
Hope that helps,
Karen x

.Yeah karen is right so long as you are the producer and sell direct to the public the venue is irrelevant.

So then, can I sell the eggs that my chooks lay in my pet shop?

If so, what are the regs?

Ian

Oh this is interesting  ;D Thanks for the info.

I thought you had to have some form of basic health and Hygiene Certification to sell produce i.e. eggs etc ???

I admit Ive never looked into it and never sold anything, just presumed I guess.

(Presumption is generally the mother of all - well you know how that goes)  ;D I'm an expert on that one   :dunce: :-[

Good luck with the fate sounds like a chance to sell and a great opportunity to promote locally

I know you need some sort of kitchen/hygiene assessments for produce such as jam, cakes etc that you sell to the public. I have a certificate to sell soaps (cosmetic assessments) which was a palava and glad its all over lol!!

When selling honey I think you have to have the minimum weight on the container in grammes. I had my own labels made with the weight on them (MGN labels Norwich) cheap cheap I'm not sure about non food items though? Now in France no one really pays much attention to the regs it's the same in the rest of Europe it's only the UK that seems to interpret the rules to the letter. I hope you make a good many sales. A little tip about finding somewhere to sell your stuff. You could try your local garden center. Some have a crafts section. I used to sell a lot of honey at two garden centers.

Me again  :)

venue is Wickhamford sports club,Sally Close, Wickhamford, Evesham, Worcestershire WR11 7RX

music from 12.00 midday until 11pm.  people coming all day cost is £15  for part of a day (which most will do) £7

from what I can gather its not much on the fete/selling front but a big gathering for country and western fans and there is a network of organisers who do similar festivals across the UK so this is the cotwolds one.  i think there might be 2 stalls in total? so unless you love C&W music it might not be appealing!!

Oh that's a shame, I thought it might be a traditional village fete - love those!
Might be a bit pricey for us too as we're having a very tight month!
I'll see what hubby says and let you know. If we don't make it, we still have to meet up these holidays!

no, its a cowboy hat and boots job I'm afraid lol!! I thought I better make sure I had all the info before people came all the way - esp those (who, like me!!) don't like C&W music!!

Definately lets have a meet up during the holidays though! xx

Well that's going to be near on torture for you having to listen to that all day!  :-\

We had a free C&W festival down by the river here a couple of weeks ago - boys enjoyed the line dancing, but managed to trip a few people up ::) Not my thing though - folk music is more me I think!

Enjoy the day   - hope you sell LOADS and we'll talk soon about getting together!

torture indeed - my parents made me listen to it morning and night as a child!!  did you see that 'No charge' you tube clip I put on facebook? my 7 year old was nagging for payment for all her 'hard work' collecting eggs, stroking rabbits etc lol so we thought we'd play that song to her - only thing was, that video wasn't what I expected, very funny though!
