Title: SSPCA
Post by: CameronS on July 24, 2010, 04:31:42 pm
Phoned up the SSPCA on the off chance that they would be able to re home, or give me contact numbers for places that may be able to help me with my extra cockerel, not an unreasonable request?

Anyway, i got through to my local center, Edinburgh, (one of the few that actually deal with farm animals), to get a blatant, and rude

i have all my birds up on Bird Trader, noone seems interested in a lone, mongerel cockerel. I'm afraid the pot is looming.

I have decided that when i ahve the money, and the space i am goning to have a rescue for unwanted cockerels,

i think the sspca would then be intrested. all cocks they would think that you were cock fighting. all those males and no ladies would result in a lot of cut up chickens.

Well i suppose i would ahve to have separate pens, 3 to a pen, mixed ages. who knows with no hens around hormone levels would be down.    ;D

I really think that the SSPCA shouldn't be knocked for not re-homing cross bred cockerels. I have no experience of them (the SSPCA), but if there is no breeding value in a cockerel, then a good marinade in red (preferably the cheapest bulgarian I have to add) wine and a very slow cooking in a low oven is the best solution all round.

That's where ours are going, once they start crowing and I get fed up with feeding them!

Cameron, do you have a hen you can put with the cockerel, put a price on the hen, and the male is free ....sometimes that works.  Unfortunately, this years hatch are all just turning into cockerels, so they is a lot advertised.  There are a couple of places, which will take in unwanted cockerels, but they are both in England, so a long way from you.

I have seven running freee range with the hens - plus an iffy one from the hen rescue, who looks like a cockerel, but does not crow or take interest in the hens, so he does not count.  But I have a few of this years silkies turning into cockerels, and a few of the small chicks too.  So, I myself have a big problem, an a lot of crowing going on.  I will have to do some serious advertising myself to reduce the numbers.

all the hens i have for sale, al ready have a cock paired with them, hmmmm.

I would rather not kill him, mongerel though he may be, he is the nicest home bred bird i have ever had, nocks spots of the LS.
it's not that i couldn't eat him, i would rather give him a chance first.

it wasn't really the fact the sspca couldn't home him (i never really asked that), it was ther fact they couldn't suggest anywhere, and the rudeness of the lady on the end of the phone..

How old is your cockerel, is he docile? and what breed? I'm looking for a trio of anything nice, but could maybe take him if he's not aggressive to people. I'm near Dunino

the two youngsters this post was originally about have both gone, but after much consideration i have decided also to get rid of my 18month old male, he is a light Sussex, he is a friendly bird. he has shown no signs what so ever as being aggressive towards humans, but will not think twice about sounding the alarm if a predator comes towards the girls, or see of intruders IE cats/buzzards/crows.

the male is ftgh, i am near peat in in fife, so not to far away. i have no hens the same breed as him, unfortunately.
