Title: Pigs and apples
Post by: suziequeue on July 23, 2010, 09:56:01 pm
Hubby rounded up all the unripe little windfalls and fed them to the pigs this afternoon.

They seemed very relaxed and happy when I came home :-)

Will they come to any harm??

Dont know if its an old wives tale, but when i had my pigs mum & dad said that if they eat tom many apples especially wind-drops then they are likely to be drunk because the fermenting process has started with the apples breaking down????

Like i said dont know how much truth in this but if your were very relaxed they may have been a bit pi55ed??

any people got any thoughts on this

Only problem with them may be if they are very unripe pigs may get upset stomachs.

On one of the farms where Dad worked The Mester kept The pigs in the orchard they ate apples and pears plums and damsons with the stones then all the acorns and cob nuts and walnuts. When they were killed in November they were always very good eating.Do you know what a root cutter is?It was my and brother Bills job taking turns at Noddin our eads at the wall mekin a scuttle full of Mangold chips Which were then mixed wi barley meal and tipped in their trough and a bucket of water poured on top.We liked to see them blow bubbles in the trough to mix the meal together>we were sure thats what they did, all ways they would blow bubbles before eating the mixture :farmer:
