Need something that can cope efficiently with greenery and branches up to 1.5 cm diameter. Don't want the expense of a forestry size piece of kit however, but neither do I want something that has a hissy fit and seizes up every five minutes. Recommendations or experiences welcomed.

We hired one for a day from a local plant hire firm. That way we got an industrial sized machine that ate everything. We worked in shifts to keep it fed but got through an awful large amount of brash in that time.

I really need something on hand through the Winter months so I can chip as I go - can't leave it where it lies as it will get wet/rot/smother grazing land and don't want the bother of piling it up ready for batch chipping later.

If your branches are only 1.5cm I presume you could use a shredder instead? If so then I can recommend one from Screwfix. My friend has one and uses it a lot. Never failed on him and he puts a lot of branches through it. Worth a look.

Unless its a PTO its not worth the hassle - you need to spend far too much just hire one

Though I'd probably agree that hiring is a good option, if you want a strong petrol chipper shredder then I'd suggest the earthquake chipper/shredder. I've found mine has coped with what I throw at it and certainly bigger than you are suggesting. Not as dear as the professional models but fine for my work. It also starts first pull - which is my biggest deciding factor when buying machines.
