Title: Weird hatching!
Post by: dixie on July 13, 2010, 11:28:33 am
Put 10 eggs under a broody in our maternity shed! Sat happily (but think she ate 1 egg), started hatching on Friday, it was really hot and the first one out had skin missing off its neck, not sure if the hen pecked it?? it was very bent too. The next one out seemed ok, just hot, I tried to ventilate it as much as possible but it was over 30deg, so not easy. The hen left the nest on Saturday with the 2 healthy chicks and the damaged one, on sunday the 1st chick died, Sunday afternoon another one hatched! 48 hrs after the first one, but it struggled to survive, lasted more than 24 hours then died this morning.  So just the 2 chicks from this lot, havent opened the other egg yet but will do!

well we didn't have any heat, my broodie hatched her five eggs out yesterday. Quite pleased with that, so now we have 22 chicks around the place... (and I bet at least 15 of them are going to turn out to be cockerels....)

I just had a call from the chap who bought 9 Buff orpie chicks from me - 7 of them were cockerels!  ::)
A good thing for me though as he wants some more!!  :D
