Title: Space needed for geese at night?
Post by: GribinIsaf on September 26, 2017, 09:03:50 pm
We are about to take on a gander and five geese from friends who are going abroad for a few months.  They keep them inside a supposedly fox proof electric fence and do not shut them up at night.  However they have had loses to foxes in the past.  We do plan to shut them up at night and had earmarked a spare shed.

However we are now thinking that at only five feet square that is not enough space for six large geese to spend the night without being argumentative.

Would be interested to know if people agree and if so what floor space you would allocate?

Many thanks

I've never kept geese but just working on size I would have thought that 5 feet by five feet would only be enough for a  couple of geese.

I think it depends on how they get on when in an enclosed space. If their used to being outside at night it'll be new to them so their might be squabbles. I'd probably try splitting the gander and his wife away from the 'unattached' geese.

We used to keep that number in a similar space (well, 8x4, with restricted headroom), without issues. They were used to it though.

Just beware that they need really good ventilation, and will probably also eat the shed.
