Title: Bilberries
Post by: Glencairn on September 25, 2017, 01:35:54 pm
How would I go about introducing Bilberries?

I would initially like to plant some in my garden and then once they had established move a small amount to my ground in order to promote greater animal diversity.

The variety that stood out as being native to Scotland is Vaccinium Uliginosum - any ideas where I could source these?   Thanks.

Or "erts" as I know them.  Don't know where one can buy Uliginosum, but perhaps some local cuttings/seed (stratification required) would be the solution.  I too have a mind to plant up a bed idc with donors from my hedges - Myrtillus I believe - as I'm not a great fan of blueberries.  Unfortunately, my wild ones didn't fruit at all well this year for some reason!

Thank you.

I managed to find a nursery in the Black Isle that sells them. It's early days yet, I've only had them for a week, but I'll see how they take at home first before I try to establish them in the wild.  :garden:
