Title: Mob grazing - which breeds?
Post by: macgro7 on September 06, 2017, 10:22:55 am
I'm looking into which breeds would be the most suitable for mob grazing (cell grazing, strip grazing) in an agroforestry setting.
I.e. they would be grazing in small portable (electric fence) paddocks moved every day, with enough forage for everyone for one day. The paddocks would be on lanes between rows of trees (mostly fruit trees so not too tall) of 12-20 metres wide.
I imagine this type of management would create a lot of windbreaks so I suppose they might be more humidity and therefore slightly more risk of fly strike etc. Because the stock are moved every day and don't return to the same pasture for 5-6 weeks we reduce worm burden and increase rest period for grass, and because of that a lot more grass can grow.

I don't think any flighty breeds like primitive  island breeds or goats would be the best for this system.
I was thinking of easy care as they are less prone to fly strike. What do you think?
We have market for whole lambs all year round as well as hogget
