Title: Flys on pigs
Post by: wayfarer on August 25, 2017, 05:03:31 pm
Both of my Oxford Sandy and Black pigs have got grazes on their ears.  Not sure how and we have checked their sty and pen for sharp bits so perhaps they are biting each other a bit - they are certainly playful at times.  The problem is that there are flys congregating on the sites and although there are no signs of maggots they are preventing the wounds from healing.  I have tried antiseptic spray, fly repellant  and plastic plaster spray (as suggested on another website) all to no effect.  Anyone got any other suggestions - they aren't bothering the pigs but they don't look nice and I really don't want things to get worse.

I use Iodotar, from agri merchants.  As the name suggests it's a mixture of iodine (to sterilize) and tar, which sticks and dries but is still flexible.

I had the same issue on Monday with my pigs after a scrap - nasty little buggers congregating in droves. After disinfecting the sites I slathered Sudocrem on. The shops were shut and it was all I had to hand in the house. Seems to have done the job.
