Title: Shetlands
Post by: Shetlands on August 16, 2017, 11:04:27 am
I have four Shetlands, i am based close to Barnstaple. I only have two acres so would like to hire a Shetland Ram. Does anybody have one or know of someone who has one. I have had them for three years and i think now is as good a time as ever. I have had the vet to check them out and they are in perfect health. Thank you for any advice or help you can give me.

How far do you want to travel?
I've got rams but am in mid Wales.  Why not look up breeders in your area on the breed society website or phone them,

I would have thought that with only 4 sheep the cost of hiring a ram, including possible pick up and collection charges, would eat a long way into any profit you may make from the offspring.
I personally would look into buying a ram lamb or shearling for meat prices, then if you don't want to keep him, sell in the New Year when meat prices have gone up, and make a bit on him as well.
Keep your eye on local sheep sales, or advertise for one.
