Just wanted to share our joy with everyone. Yesterday our Tam gilt delivered 5 perfect little piggies - all live and healthy. This was out first litter and a result of my attempt to AI - I put GOS on her and so we have delightfully marked wee piglets ranging from a light sandy through to a deep ginger with black spots and splodges. 4 boars and a gilt. Big Ginge' was marvellous although a little alarmed with the arrival of the first couple - she got up and swung her back end around and the wee dot came into the world with a bit of a bump - but none the worse for it. She has so far demonstrated wonderful mothering characteristics. I know you'll understand me when I say that yesterday's events gave me a wonderful life experience and I am honoured and grateful that my clever girl was happy to have me lurking in the background to witness her farrowing. If I could work out how to upload photies - I would do so. May work on this - depends if I can stay away from the pen for long enough. Oh by the way - what's the general view regarding castration - they will be brought on for meat. Right-ho - better nip out to check all is well .....again!

Congratulations!!!! :) :) :) :)
I'd love to see some pictures.
Personally I don't castrate and send the boys off at 26 weeks.
Enjoy! :pig:

Agree with JulieS, don't need to castrate

Occasionally a friend castrates mine if I feel brave enough to get the boys out at 3 days old. Normally they go uncastrated always at least 6 months old. If you are worried about boar taint keep the males and females separate from about 3 months old.
