Title: Poison ivy and sheep
Post by: Tracy mayoh on July 24, 2017, 01:14:10 pm
Hello
Advice is poison ivy dangerous to sheep if they eat it????
I'm thinking of putting some along fence line to fill in the gaps but if it grows over fence onto field side we're sheep are and they eat it will it make them poorly
Cheers

Normal ivy is fine, sheep and goats love it and it is very useful to get a sick ewe/goat eating again. I didn't think there was poison ivy in the UK?

Are you in The States Tracy Mayoh?  Otherwise you don't need to worry about ivy being poisonous, as long as it's not eaten in vast amounts.  In fact British Ivy can be used as an appetite stimulant for sheep, in small amounts.  'Poison Ivy' doesn't grow in the UK unless someone has imported it  ???

In the USA they use goats for controlling poison ivy. I assume sheep wouldn't be bothered by it either but you never know...
My goats love normal ivy.
