Title: Hello from devon
Post by: indieruss on May 31, 2017, 10:41:06 am
Hello everyone,

New on here and thought I'd introduce myself.

My name's Russell and my partners name is Becky. We live on the edge of Dartmoor and rent 20 acres from various people around our village. We keep Whiteface Dartmoor and Poll Dorset sheep, chickens, ducks and two nutty collies.

We're planning on keeping pigs next and hopefully cattle in the future. So will be asking lots of questions!

Thanks for reading and all the best

Russ

Hi there Russ & Becky

I'm in North Cornwall but head down to Dartmoor at least twice a month for spinning and weaving at Peter Tavy Guild.

Have you decided which sort of pigs, and which cattle?

Hello,

Sorry for late reply - not been on since my first post!

We're planning on keeping Devon Ruby red cattle and are going to try various breeds of pigs as starting with fatting weaners. Thinking Tamworth's and saddlebacks.

Any thoughts/advise would be most welcomed!

Tamworths are great, the meat is fantastic, once you get regular customers you'll be sorted, we used to sell ours by the half, paid for the day they arrive. Owners were allowed to visit. From memory we got upto about 48 per year, we used to buy them in as weaners.
