One of our ewes has given birth to a lamb but it has died and now the ewe is very distressed and ideas how to deal with upset ewe

It's a natural reaction. She will get over it in 24 hours usually. Short of skinning the dead lamb, and putting it on a pet lamb for her to adopt, there is nothing else you can do.

Ring round your local farmers and ask if any if them has a spare lamb she could adopt. She'll be much happier with a lamb to rear.
She will probably take it without any problem, but it will increase the chances of a trouble-free adoption to skin the dead lamb and put its skin on the adoptee. You'll find loads of descriptions of how best to do this if you search this board.
