Title: Disinfecting the lambing shed
Post by: Womble on April 08, 2017, 09:24:28 am
Due to the DEFRA restrictions, our ducks have been incarcerated in the hay shed for the past three months, bedded on old hay. I've turfed them out now, because I need the space back for lambing.

Anyway, I've cleaned out all the old bedding, but what's the best way of disinfecting the floor before lambing and in between uses?  It's just dirt, so I don't want it all turning to mud.

Thanks!

Something like Sorgene in a hand pump sprayer? Will give a fine mist over the dirt but not enough to turn it to mud?

I'd say exactly as twizzel.... use a hand pumped spray, very fine mist, no puddles!  We use verkon.

Disinfectant powder like you put down in lamb/calf/pig pens. I can't think what it is called but I love the small of it! Ask in the feed merchant.

I would have thought the diluted products would be inactive on soil .   Either cubicle powder as harmony says or a layer of hydrated lime and use the liquid on the walls/hard surfaces

We use hydrated lime and sunshine.

I would used lime.  Unless your floor is completely dry, disinfectant will be of no use.  Try ringing your vets they will be able to advise.

At our feed merchants you can only get huge sacks of lime... so much better to buy a bag of Cosisan (but we have concrete floors in the goat house).

I noticed someone using lime on the floor as disinfectant? Personally I would get it squeaky clean before anything...

LOL, remember it's dirt though. The only way it's going to squeak is if we put some weaners in there!

Thanks for the advice everybody. It looks as though I have an afternoon of scrubbing and tidying ahead of me  .

Hydrated lime is the answer.

Lime.  I used it in my cow shed after removing my hens, before my rams had to go in - was a bit of a rush job, I would usually wash down with proper defra approved disinfectant as it's a concrete floor, but I was in a hurry (and it doesn't dry very quick in there) , so I spread lime everywhere, including up the walls. I used a lot, and made sure it covered everything (rub it around with a broom to get a good covering).  Wear a dust-mask, and googles.
