Title: Sub standard Slapmarking
Post by: MiriMaran on June 26, 2010, 08:53:43 pm
We got a letter from the abattoire saying that the GOS we sent for slaughter last week weren't slapmarked well enough so really I'm wanting any advice on how to improve the clarity of the mark.  We have a slapmarker that has lots of pins with our letters and numbers and Tattoo ink.  My husband did the actual marking and hit the pigs pretty hard - on one of them he said he sort of felt the slapmarker stick in the skin, but not on the other attempts.

What can we do to improve our technique with the next lot of pigs we have please?

It may not be your technique - how old is the slapmarker you used? Older types do not transmit ink-to-skin very well.

Thanks

Its brand new with conical shaped pins.

Ok - If the pins are conical, chances are that you are not slapping hard enough!.

Have a look at this guide: http://www.idandtrace.com/firsttimer.htm

We only sell ID & Trace marking equipment for pigs, as we consider them the best product available.

Thanks

Great, thanx for that.  I've just read it and I think we just have to be braver with the slap action!!

You should see our slaughterman at the abattoir when he does it.   Really whacks them.  (Which is why mine are done before they arrive  :) )

Oh God, I can't bare the idea of whacking them - maybe I'll make myself scarce on that day!

Conical pins need greater force.

If possible use a slapper with pointed parallel pins

Thanks

Wellllll if you are going to start a Biblical sexist thread, just remember your origins - made from a bit of unwanted rib as I recall ?  ;D

I have just re-read my posting.  I need to make it clear that although I am very old, I wasn't actually there at the time to witness the event  :D
